SAN JUAN BATANGAS – RETREAT HOUSE

Built from the ground up on a beachside site, this vacation residence was conceived with a single governing idea: that a home near the sea should never compete with it. The client’s brief called for a space to fully decompress — somewhere generous enough to gather family, light enough to feel like perpetual holiday, and honest enough in its materials to hold no pretense of the city left behind. IEO responded with a tropical biophilic language rooted in the textures and rhythms of the natural world: woven rattan sphere pendants draped in trailing greenery animate the double-height common area like a living canopy, while the foyer greets arrivals not with grandeur but with warmth — a raw timber console, a large burnished artwork, and shafts of light filtering through clerestory glazing that opens directly onto the roof garden above. Every room was designed to dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior: the master suite, swathed in linen curtains and rattan woven furnishings under a slatted timber ceiling, captures morning light off the water through sun-washed windows; the guest room, spare and serene with its cane bed frame and woven wall panel, faces the sea directly; and the master bathroom, clad entirely in textured terrazzo with a freestanding stone tub and walnut joinery, reads as a spa found at the edge of a forest. On the upper terrace, a rattan swing chair suspended between tropical plantings and an open timber pergola frames the mountain-and-sea panorama as the home’s finest piece of art — a view that IEO designed every room to earn.
